What are rubrics? Why do we use rubrics?

How can I use rubrics most effectively?

Answer

Definition

Merriam-Webster (n.d.) defines rubrics as "a guide listing specific criteria for grading or scoring academic papers, projects, or tests" (para. 1).

Why do we use rubrics?

  • Make assignments less stressful.

  • Clarify instructor expectations.

  • Understand the purpose of the assignment.

  • Emphasize what you should learn from the assignment.

  • Use as a checklist for what to accomplish with the assignment.

Use the RUBRICS acronym infographic and the Understanding Rubrics PDF document linked below to further understand the purpose of rubrics and how to use them effectively.
