What does it mean to write using the MEAL plan?
Answer
MEAL is a pneumonic created by the Duke University Writing Studio you can use to remember to include the important parts of a paragraph.
Main idea |
What is your paragraph all about? You can also think of the main idea as a topic sentence. It lets the reader know what point the paragraph is trying to make.
|
Evidence |
How can you support the main idea of your paragraph? What research and resources do you have to backup what you are trying to say?
|
Analysis |
What does the evidence mean? Why is it important to the main point of the paragraph? How does your evidence prove the statement you are trying to make?
|
Link back to the larger claim | How does this paragraph tie into your paper as a whole? What does it have to do with your thesis statement? Your reader should be able to tell why this paragraph is important to the claim you are making in your entire paper. |
