A proper noun is a specific person, place, or thing.  For example, Rasmussen College is a proper noun because it is a specific place. 

Typical proper nouns include

  • Names of people (John Smith)
  • Names of places or locations (Minneapolis, the Palace Theater, Starbucks)
  • Names of geographical landmarks (Mississippi River, the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains)
