Synopsis is just another word for summary of the keypoints.  You're right that the word synopsis is usually used when referring to novels or other literature, but it can be used when referring to any concept which can be summarized.

For example, I might ask you to give me brief synopsis of your employment history.  In response, you would summarize the types of jobs you've had and where you've worked, but you would not need to go into the small details about who your supervisors were, what you got paid, and what tasks or projects you did.
