According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a database is "a usually large collection of data organized especially for rapid search and retrieval (as by a computer)." 

To find out more about databases in a computer programming or data management sense:

To find out more about the library's databases, which are used for research:

• Go to the library's A-Z Databases list.
• Each database in that list holds many different types of information, so you'll want to read the descriptions to decide what database will give you the type of information you need: copies of articles previously published in magazines, journals, and newspapers; digital books; images; summaries of a topic; entries from dictionaries and encyclopedias; etc.
• The list is alphabetical by database title.
