What is an elevator speech? How do I create one?

Answer

What is an elevator speech?

An elevator speech is a brief “pitch” to persuade someone or to spark interest in something you are passionate about. It’s called an elevator speech because it should only last as long as a short elevator ride. In a sense, it is similar to a sales pitch and should be interesting, memorable, and to the point.

Use these prompting questions as you create an elevator speech:

  • Why is this topic of importance to anyone other than you?
  • What is your goal for your pitch? To persuade someone to agree with your position?
  • What two or three key points do you want to communicate?

Use these four tips when creating an elevator speech:

  • Keep it short and to the point (under two minutes)
  • Focus on essential information (two or three key points)
  • Present information in a positive, engaging, and persuasive manner
  • Proofread, edit, and practice to ensure that your message is clear
