What is a vision board and how do I create one?

Answer

A Vision board is a tool used to bring goals and hopes for the future to life visually. Vision boards can be either created using physical items (i.e., attaching images to poster board) or can be created using digital tools such as Pinterest.

Because a vision board brings a focus to your personal goals, a good first step is to create an outline of topical areas that define your goals.

Vision boards can be created with poster board, images. Alternatively, digital tools can be used to create an online vision board using tools such as:

For example:

Hector, a high school student, wants to be a police officer in the future. He has created a vision board to help him focus on bringing his goal to fruition.

He recently created a vision board by using a piece of tagboard to which he has attached a number of items.

  • A magazine picture of a police officer
  • A printed picture of his grade sheet with his high marks circled
  • The logo of the college he would like to attend for the Law Enforcement program with a bullet-pointed note of the entrance requirements he’ll need to meet
  • A news article about the importance of police in his community
  • A flow chart that shows all of the steps it’ll take for him to meet his goal

Hector will add/make changes to his vision board as he works toward reaching his goal. He has it displayed in his bedroom.

Although Hector created his vision board using physical items, he could also have created his board virtually using an app like Pinterest.
