How do I cite an advertisement in APA 7th edition format?

Answer

There are no clear rules for citing an advertisement in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.) However, you can create a reference using the APA pattern for references.

Author. (Date). Title. Source.

Advertisements can appear in print publications (magazines or newspapers), on television, online, via the radio or podcasts, and on video websites like YouTube.  If the advertisement is recoverable, meaning that it appears magazine or newspaper or recording (YouTube) that anyone can access, include both a reference in the Reference list and intext citation.

Many advertisements are ephemeral and, therefore, are not recoverable. For example, an advertisement heard on the radio or on television may not be easy to find at a later date.  If this is the case, treat it as a Personal Communication and only cite in the text of your paper.

Advertisement in a print publication:

Format:

Title of advertisement [Advertisement]. (Year, Month day). In Title of Magazine, Volume(Number), p. #

Example:

Oral-B Dry Mouth [Advertisement]. (2021, May 24, May 30). In Time,197(19-20), p. 7.

Intext citation:  (Oral-B Dry Mouth, 2021).

Advertisement found on YouTube:

Group who uploaded to YouTube. (Year). Title of advertisement [Video]. YouTube. URL

Example:

Commercials Funny. (2021). Cheetos Super Bowl commercial 2021 Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Shaggy - It wasn't me [Video]. YouTube. https://youtu.be/llxdasBrDMI

Intext citation: (Commercials Funny, 2021).
