How can I create a histogram using Microsoft Excel?
Answer
A histogram is a graphical representation of the frequency of data points grouped into specified ranges or "bins." Histograms resemble bar charts but the bars are adjacent to one another. See an example of a histogram below:
The first step in creating a histogram is to create a chart with your data in Microsoft Excel. For example, the following data set includes student grades on a recent quiz:
Next, highlight the data and click on the Insert tab (1). Then click on the down arrow next to the histogram icon (2), and select the first histogram option in the pop-up box (3).
A histogram will appear:
This chart is not displaying the information in the groups or "bins" preferred. In order to get information displayed in 5 point increments (ie, scores of 60-65, 65-70, 70-75, etc.) the horizontal axis can be customized. Right click on the horizontal axis and select format axis from the pop-up box.
A panel will appear on the right side of the page. Select "Bin Width" and type 5 in the textbox.
The table will be updated to reflect the Bin width selected, in this case 5 point increments:
NOTE: The values on the vertical axis can also be edited by following the same steps as the horizontal axis. Click on the vertical axis and select Format Axis. Because "bins" are not used in the vertical axis, you can make selections from the panel on the right of the page.
