How do I write an outline for an informative speech?
Answer
The purpose of creating an outline before delivering an informative speech is to organize the information and ideas you plan to share with your audience in an effective and logical manner. Also, a well planned outline will ensure that important information is included in the speech and that you don't digress and wander off topic.
The format of an outline looks like this:
Topic: Title of Speech
Purpose: To inform
Thesis: A statement clearly describing the topic and the points made in the presentation.
I. Introduction
A. Attention grabbing opening statement
B. Reason to listen
C. Thesis statement
D. Preview of points to be covered
II. First main point
A. First subpoint
1. Supporting detail
2. Supporting detail
B. Second subpoint
1. Supporting detail
2. Supporting detail
III. Second main point
A. First subpoint
1. Supporting detail
2. Supporting detail
B. Second subpoint
1. Supporting detail
2. Supporting detail
IV. Third main point
A. First subpoint
1. Supporting detail
2. Supporting detail
B. Second subpoint
1. Supporting detail
2. Supporting detail
V. Conclusion
A. Restatement of main points
B. Restatement of thesis
C. Concluding remarks
Follow these rules whenever developing an outline:
1. Include one idea for each point, subpoint, or supporting detail
2. If there is one point, there must be a second point. Likewise, if there is one supporting point there must be a second supporting point. In other words, if there is an A there must be a B., if there is a 1. there should be a 2.
3. Be consistent! If full sentences are used to describe points and subpoint, use full sentences throughout the outline. Make sure that verb tense is consistent thoughtout as well.
