How do I write step-by-step instructions?

Answer

Well-written instructions have the following characteristics:

  • A clear and concise title
  • A list of supplies or resources (if needed)
  • Short sentences describing one action
  • Sentences written in present tense using action verbs
  • Sentences arranged in sequential, logical order
  • A description of the final result

How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

Supplies and ingredients:

  • Plate
  • Knife
  • Two slices of bread
  • Jar of peanut butter
  • Jar of jelly or jam

Instructions:

1. Place one slice of bread on a plate.

2. Open the jar of peanut butter.

3. Using a knife, spread a layer of peanut butter on the slice of bread.

4. Open the jar of jelly or jam.

5. Using the knife, spread a layer of jelly or jam on top of the peanut butter.

6. Place the second slice of bread on top of the jelly layer so that the slice aligns with the bottom slice of bread.

7. Using a knife, slice the sandwich into two equal sized pieces.
