What is constructive feedback? How is constructive feedback given?

Answer

The goal of providing constructive feedback is to achieve a positive outcome. The way that feedback is delivered can impact whether the desired outcome is achieved. For best results, the receiver of the feedback should feel encouraged and supported when improvements are needed.

One method for delivering constructive feedback is called the "feedback sandwich."  The "feedback sandwich" uses a metaphor of a sandwich to describe the stages in delivering constructive feedback. The top "bun" includes a positive comment about the work. The "meat" of the feedback points out where improvements are recommended.  The bottom "bun" or conclusion communicates how making the recommended changes will lead to improvement.  The example below provides an illustration of this method.

Top Bun

Provide a positive comment about the work: "I like your approach

to this topic"

Lettuce Transition: "One area that may need improvement is..."
Meat

Discussion of areas that need improvement: "You might think

about rearranging the presentation of information to strengthen

your argument"

Bottom Bun

Closing: "Making these changes will persuade readers to take

your position."
