How do I reference / cite patient education sheets (on a drug or disease or condition) in APA?

Answer

For patient education or drug information sheets, use NoodleTool's "Pamphlet or Brochure" option. If you do not use NoodleTools, the pattern for pamphlets/brochures is like this:

Author. Date. Title [Brochure]. Publisher name. URL.

It is likely you will not have an author for pamphlets and brochures or information sheets. If that is the case, then the title goes first, in the author's place.

A reference example for a brochure:

Cedars-Sinai. (2015). Human papillomavirus (HPV) and oropharyngeal cancer [Brochure]. https://www.cedars-sinai.org/content/dam/cedars-sinai/cancer/sub-clinical-areas/head-neck/documents/hpv-throat-cancer-brochure.pdf

  • Parenthetical citation: (Cedars-Sinai, 2015)
  • Narrative citation: Cedars-Sinai (2015)
  • Brochures, pamphlets, or flyers follow the same format as report references.
  • This brochure has an organizational author rather than individual authors.
  • Include the description “[Brochure]” in square brackets after the title of the brochure.

NOTE: Be aware that many patient education sheets are simply printed off from a standard source by the pharmacy or clinic or hospital.  That means the pharmacy, clinic or hospital is NOT the publisher. Thus, you need to look carefully at the information. You may find a publisher/publisher location company that is completely unrelated.
