Does a thesis statment or topic sentence have to be included in an annotated bibliography?

Answer

Often, a thesis statement is not included in an annotated bibliography BUT some assignments may require that the thesis statement be included.  Please consult with your professor for clarification on assignment requirements.

An annotation is comprised of the following:

  • 2-4 sentences summarizing the main ideas of the source
  • 1-2 sentences to assess and evaluate the source
  • 1-2 sentences to reflect on the source

You may use the information from your sources to formulate your thesis statement and support your claims.

Learn more about annotated bibliographies in the APA Guide.
