In Wikipedia there is a quote from the artist the article is about. Do I cite wikipedia as the source or where they say the quote is from?

Credit the source you actually found the information in, in this case, cite Wikipedia.

However, make sure you include information about the original or indirect source, in this case, the artist.

For example, if Allport's work is cited in Nicholson and you did not read Allport's work, create only a reference for Nicholson in your reference list. In the text, use one of the following citation methods:

  • Allport's diary (as cited in Nicholson, 2003) indicates that ....
  • Nicholson (2003) cites Allport as saying ...

Additionally, please note that many instructors will not accept Wikipedia as a source for a student paper (learn why).

Instead of Wikipedia, consider using one of our electronic references sources such as Credo eReference or Gale Virtual Reference for information on the artist.
