How can I identify what type of resource I am citing? How can I tell the difference between an article, website article, or ebook when viewing online?

Answer

One of the first steps in creating an APA reference for a resource is to determine the resource type; are you citing a book, an article, a website?  It can be challenging to accurately identify the resource type when viewing online. Use the tips provided below to correctly identify the resource you are citing.

It is likely a Book or eBook if:

  • You located the item in one of the ebook databases
  • You saw this icon in your Discovery search results:
  • The resource is divided into chapters
  • There is a title page that includes a publisher, copyright date, and ISBN number

It is likely an Article if:

  • it appears in a journal, magazine, or newspaper
  • Includes a periodical title, volume number, issue number, and publication date

  • you saw one of these icons in you library database search results lists:

 or

It is likely a Web Article if:

  • you found it on the internet
  • you cannot find a journal title, volume number, issue number, DOI number
  • it looks like it is only available on the website
  • the URL in the address bar will bring you back to the article
