What is a Venn diagram? How do I create one?

Answer

A Venn diagram is a pictorial representation of how finite groups relate to one another.  Finite groups are represented by circles -- often overlapping -- placed on a rectangular plane.

For example, the following Venn diagram represents the ownership of cats and dogs among a group of people.

Yellow circle = People who own cats

Blue circle = People who own dogs

Intersection of two circles = People who own both a cat and a dog

You can create a Venn diagram using the following:

  • Microsoft Word
    • Select Insert > SmartArt > Relationship > Basic Venn

  • Canva
    • Create a free account
    • Type Venn Diagram in the search text box
    • Select one of the free Venn diagram options
    • Design your Venn diagram!
