Where can I find information about how my state regulates paralegals?

Answer

The regulation of many professions, including paralegals and legal assistants, are the responsibility of the state.  The National Federation of Paralegal Associations, Inc. (NFPA) has created a chart, linked below, that provides the following information regarding the regulation of paralegals and legal assistants for each state:

  • Definition
  • Unauthorized practice of law
  • Type of regulation
  • Regulation history

This document was created in 2014.  You may wish to consult your state Bar Association, state's code and regulations as indicated in the "regulation chart" for any changes or updates.
