This is a great example of how seemingly minor injuries can go bad.

The main question you want to answer is what FACTORS allowed the infection to spread BEFORE Richard went to the emergency room.

You have the full story in front of you, so it is up to you to determine the following:

  • What caused the injury to Richard's finger?
  • What did Richard do incorrectly in treating the injury?
  • Richard went back to work before getting checked out by a professional, how did this impact his injury?
  • Are there any other things that happened that might have allowed the infection to spread or get worse?

Use your critical thinking skills. What might you have done in a similar situation? How does that compare to what Richard did?
