The following are recommend on ways to build your professional network:

Be active on professional networking sites, especially LinkedIn. Not sure how to get started with your LinkedIn profile, get guidance using Hiration's LinkedIn Review.
Connect and follow employers on Handshake.
Utilize social media by following groups and organizations within your field of study and engaging in posts and discussions.
Volunteer within your community.
Attend events and conferences in your area hosted by organizations or companies in your industry.
