Start with a definition of the word. Where did it originate? Are there any synonyms that might be helpful to search for as well? Think about what other terms would be associated with this topic: signs and symbols, visual cues, text communication, etc. Searching broadly then narrowing your terms down to particular keywords that you find in multiple places will help keep you on the right track.

Try starting with Discovery-All-in-One for "history of emoticons." What aspect of the history of emoticons are you interested in?

Online reference sources like or the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online may also be good places to search for information on emoticons.
