Generally, reference books such as encyclopedias, can give you background information on historical topics and key terms.  From there, you can look up those key terms/keywords or names to find information from other books or from journal and magazine articles. 

Start your search with keywords, such a "printing press" or "telegraph" or "computer" or any other invention.
