Generally, reference books such as encyclopedias, can give you background information on historical topics and key terms.  From there, you can look up those key terms/keywords or names to find information from other books or from journal and magazine articles. 

Start your search with keywords, such as "computer" or "social media" or "morse code" or any other invention.
